Everyone is talking about social media, so what does it mean to you?

Everyone is talking about social media, so what does it mean to you? Well, if you are lucky enough to be in a business with products or services related to things people are naturally drawn to then answering this question is pretty easy. An example of this kind of business would be a scuba shop, motor cycle store, or any other business that has a product that is a lot of fun or can connect with people in an deeper or emotional way like music or really great food. If you are not one of these types of business like say a plumber or air conditioning company figuring out social media can be much harder.

Social Search

No one sits at home thinking about what thier plumber is up to. However when you need one the opinion of your friends on who the best plumber in town is pretty important. This is where social media like facebook or twiter comes in.

The newest versions of Bing and Google’s search engine algorithms are starting to use this virtual word of mouth information in determining who should be included in the search engine results page or SERP. This is why getting liked on facebook is important. take a look at this video to see how bing is integrating “likes” into their search results.

There will never be a discussion on your plumbing companies website where people are discussing the virtues of a tankless water heater however, if you are able to collect likes from your customers their friends will see your business when they search for a plumber in your town.

Social Media as a Communication Platform

The other great use for social media for companies that people are not passionate about is how the platform is a great way to communicate with your customers about things like specials or last minute deals. Social Media has been designed to integrate this messaging into your customers mobile phones and devices. So when you tweet out a last minute deal because you are light on appointments your customers who already like doing business with you will get that offer right on their phone. This is a great way to cut through the clutter of email marketing and other more expensive mobile forms of marketing.
